We grew up with vinyl records and spent many childhood hours reading liner notes and losing ourselves in the art of superbly designed albums like Roberta Flack’s 1971 Killing Me Softly and Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 Rumors. By the time we were designing music packaging for labels such as Nonesuch Records and Universal in the 1990s, vinyl was done, but within the CD format there were still great creative opportunities to build a robust visual experience for the listener.
